Ankle Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints. It can cause pain and stiffness in any joint in the body and is common in the small joints of the foot and ankle.

There are more than 100 forms of arthritis, many of which affect the foot and ankle. All types can make it difficult to walk and perform activities you enjoy.

Arthritis in the ankle is most commonly described as chronic joint inflammation that causes frequent swelling, aches, and pain in the tissues around the ankle and other surrounding connecting ligaments. The most common type of arthritis found in the foot and ankle is known as Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease caused by wear-and-tear that breaks down the cartilage. Additionally, cartilage is the connective tissue at the ends of the bones that protects and cushions bones during movement. In most cases, Osteoarthritis becomes prevalent and slowly develops after injury. In other cases, poor mechanics such as flat feet, abnormally high arches, or a pronated/supinated gait can lead to Osteoarthritis.

Although there is no cure for arthritis, there are many treatment options available to slow the progress of the disease and relieve symptoms. With proper treatment, many people with arthritis are able to manage their pain, remain active, and lead fulfilling lives. Any pain or discomfort in or around the ankle should be evaluated by a Foot & Ankle Specialist. Click the Schedule Appointment button above to contact our office right away.
